Ergonomics=Productivity
POSTED BY GeneWe all love our laptops but what do we do with them 90% of the time? We use them at our desks, hunched over our tiny screens, pecking away at our chicklet-sized keyboards, causing cramped wrists and sore necks. Of course you can use a proper monitor, keyboard, and mouse. I’ve been doing this for years, enjoying the large workspace provided by combining the 15″ laptop screen and a 24″ desktop screen, while hammering away at the finest keyboard on the market (the Unicomp Customizer 104). All this stuff on the desk takes up a ton of space though, and you’re still looking down on the laptop screen or propping it up on top of a pile of books or broken hard drives.
Enter the adjustable monitor arm!
This year I decided to take it to the next level with a monitor and laptop arm set by Ergotron. The adjustable arms let you position your monitor and laptop at a touch, allowing easy positioning of your screens for optimum comfort. Desktop space is reclaimed, with only the footprint of a small bracket at the back of the desk. Integrated wire management keeps things tidy. A side bonus is that your laptop is elevated above the fray, keeping it safe from rogue coffee cups. I love my monitor and laptop combination arm, and you will too.
- Hands, wrists, and forearms straight, and parallel to the floor, elbows at about 90 degrees with upper arms straight at the sides of the body.
- Head level with straight neck, inline with the torso.
- Feet flat on the floor, or on a footrest if the desk is too high.
- Back straight and perpendicular to the floor.
- Top of the monitor should be slightly below the top of your head.
